Through
after rest and visiting of one day in Aara, we went to the first
Holy Land Sankisa in early morning next day.
Sankisa also known as Sāmkāśyai, it was said that
Buddha Śākyamuni in heaven gave sermon to his mother
who had already passed away, and then along with Brahma
and Devraj Indra descended on this spot. Sankisa
is located in the present day Basantpur village, as for
the sacred spot is about 500 yards from the village, and now is
situated in the ruins of an ancient fort.
There
is a temple dedicated to Bisari Devi which stands on a
stupa. An Ashoka Elephant Pillar has been excavated
from close to the stupa. Near the pillar, on a platform stands a
temple with a statue of the Buddha. Because of Buddha’s sermon
to his mother and coming to earth, from then on this site has
become important for Buddhist pilgrims. Hiuen Tsang and
other Chinese travelers also mention Sankisa in their
travelogues.
