Through
going one day of tour in Nepal yesterday, we applied entry
formalities to enter India again to go to Kuśinagara
where the place of Buddha's nivāņa. Kuśinagara
was also one of 16 countries of central India in ancient. It is
located in Kasia about 50 kilometers from the northeast
of Sahanka now, and keeping the ruins of an ancient
stūpa with cremains and charcoal at present. It is said
that Buddha was cremated
(jhāpita) here after Buddha nivāņa. There is a
"Nirvāņa Temple" as for the southwest side of Kasia
and inside enshrines one enormous stone figure of Buddha' s
Nivāņa. We have already verified here was the place that
Buddha leaved us to died base on the inscription of Buddha
figure carved in 5th century Gupta era. About these
important holy place had been built a stūpa to make
obvious label, Far-shian and Xuan-zang from
China all once reached here of their tour.
The
life-span of Buddha finished being called "nivāņa", but
there is the meaning of "quiet" and "freeing" in Sanskrit.
Buddha came to human world with the human body and carry on
making showing and teaching to common people, however he would
leave human world finally, in other words he would be death
because of his health. But as for Buddha the nivāņa
meant he finished his personal ultimate task and entered the
eternal quiet state from then. It also was a perfect final
result of Buddhism practice. So about Buddha's nivāņa
deed have become important subject matter of Buddhist arts.
